A Man of His Word

A man of his word is a man who says a thing first and thinks about it afterwards; and then, whatever may be the result of thinking about it, he does what he said. Men of their word never correct a mistake, never go back on what they have said.

From Miguel de Unamuno's Nivola, Niebla (Mist)

what is your opinion on this statement?

Opinion

That being a 'man of integrity' is far more imporatant than being a 'man of his word'.
I wish more politicians were men of integrity as opposed to men of their words.

Re: Opinion

I thought maybe you were saying it was good to be this man of his word thing, to not correct mistakes.

i don't know what integrity means. does it mean actions and words and intentions are one?

and what if the politician says 'i will get elected and help my district by getting a friend a big fat contract.'

is that integrity? what about morality?

sort of like internal and extrenal validity. you need both for a valid true argument.

yes? no?

Personally, that's two DIFFERENT attributes:

1) Men who never correct a mistake.
2) Men who never go back on what they have said.

#1 are the not really good things to be. "Right or wrong, I'm right!" #2 can be good, but not always.
